On Authority Figures and the Western Mystique of Authority

Western culture has a kind of ‘mystique of authority.’ It idealizes people with power. And yet, I have met uninformed teachers, rich people who live ‘poor’ and unfulfilling lives, police officers who frequently break the law, judges with poor judgment, unfaithful, hypocritical priests, doctors with scant medical knowledge, and duplicitous politicians.  All of this suggests to me that people with authority are still precisely that: people. And they are flawed and limited just like everybody else.
