The media tends to present Christianity as unanimously pitted against the scientific account of evolution. However, consider this passage from the Christian “Liberating Life: A Report to the World Council of Churches“:
“The biological theory of evolution with its ingredients of chance and struggle for existence requires a deeper understanding of divine power. God is not a magician but one who lovingly invites the created world to participate in the unfolding of the cosmic story. Evolutionary thinking compels us to acknowledge more explicitly than ever before the continuity of the whole network of life with the universe as such” (p. 256).
This same document, I think rightly, claims that to remain relevant and in touch with the real world in order to better serve it, Christian theology needs to pay constant attention to the latest developments in the sciences (p. 257).
