On Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale

To those of you who would like to read a strangely wonderful play, I recommend Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. The first half is a tragedy, the second half is a comedy and the whole thing is pervaded by a magical sense of wonder. The play contains a talking statue, Time itself as a character, and arguably the most famous stage direction in all of Shakespeare’s works: “Exit pursued by a bear.”
