On Reading the Heart

Sometimes a heart is clear and easy to read,
Like clean type on a pristine page.
But at other times, it’s dark, murky, hard to make out,
Like a book behind a cloudy windowpane.
Whether it is our own heart or that of others,
The truth is just the same.
