Social harmony is founded, not on honesty, but on socially-accepted lies. In our society, lying is encouraged as a social convention. Ever notice how people often get angry when you tell the truth? We’ve learned to prefer comforting lies to uncomfortable truths.
We talk to each other through filters and often say what we think others want to hear rather than what we actually believe.
We’ve tied ourselves such complicate knots that we’ve forgotten how to untie them; indeed, if we all suddenly started telling the truth all the time rather than what was socially convenient, we’d probably fall into chaos. And yet, perhaps there is room for a little more truth in our lives, even if it isn’t always pleasant or palatable.
