Society is just the wild in a neat and shiny package. The same basic urges dominate us here as in the wild: survival, sex, comfort, food, and fear. We simply like to believe that we have transcended nature through our lofty civilization; but actually, culture is just the pleasant mask of the snarling beast within.
Our sophisticated minds have developed an equally sophisticated culture which both helps and harms us. I’m not saying that we should reject our cultures and pursue primitivism or Rousseau’s “state of nature,” but let’s be honest; we, human beings, are just intelligent animals among other animals. We are not superior beings looking down on other organisms; we are as environmentally-dependent and enmeshed in the web of nature as they are.
