Lovedrunk: An Ode to Rumi

By Adam J. Pearson

Oh Rumi–
Wise master of the Sufis,
Greatest of the mystic poets,
How light you write
In golden words that soar like birds,
Of those who dance in dazzling turns
And spin in wild spirals.

Dazed and dreamlike, dancing drunk
On the finest wine of love,
Which pours out of the Oneness
To fill cup-like open hearts
When the doors of mind gape wide,
Thrown open with abandon,
To let in the shining light
Of the sight of All as One.

Great love flows here–
Here, now, I find I’m lost like you
The love that fills me, blinds me
Even as it opens up my eyes,
I cannot find a thing to hate
A thing to judge,
A single one to cast away.

Great love flows here–
Come run with me,
All you who feel forsaken,
Lonely, lost and lingering ones
Be loved.
You all are welcome,
To none I close the door,
For we are One,
And you are loved.

Yet well I do recall
How my hollow heart
Once gazed
On separate forms
And turned to them
To fill its inner void.

Make me happy!
Give me peace!
Thus it cried out
Sad and lonely,
Desperate like a hungry child.

Want me, love me!
Make me whole!
For oh, I cannot love myself.
My ego saw itself in lack
And looked to you to fill it.

But now I see, at last, long last,
The separate one I thought was me–
A grain of sand upon a lonely beach
Among a thousand separated grains,
Lost and tumbling, flooded by the waves
Of Time which make us feel lost and alone,
And reduce the greatest ruins to dust–
Was never me,
For I was always One with All,
And always free.

Great Love flows here–
And now, like you, dear Rumi, my dear friend,
–How well your silver voice rings clear and true!–
I feel I am filled full,
Ful-filled,
Filled full like you,
Overflowing and abundant,
With a love that’s without cause,
A love without conditions,
That rests not on a single one,
Piled up with expectations,
But reaches far beyond all form
To transcend all divisions.

Great love flows here–
Drunk on love, I stumble through the world,
Lost, laughing wildly, I forget my name.
Who am I? Who are you?
Everywhere I look,
I see one Face,
The Face of One.
It shines in you as me
And me as you.

Great love flows here–
The awareness of this love
Is not constant in me,
But when it comes,
I know that I am free.

rumi

Great love flows here–
I turn to you, oh Rumi, my dear friend,
Though long your body passed from this wide world,
Your voice speaks on in words you left behind,
To guide us back to love the world forgot.

Great love flows here–
Let me not forget this great love, my friend,
That gives me vision of the world as One,
And lights up One as All and All as One,
In vision of a truth that’s unspoken.

Great love flows here–
Words fail when tossed into this vast Beyond,
And forms and shapes no longer seem apart,
And so in silent reverence, I fall,
In openness into my deepest heart.

Great love flows here–
Oh Rumi, my mind falls into a peace,
That words can never speak and never reach,
I know that in this love, I find release,
You teach me still, as you–in life–did teach.

Great love flows here–
Oh dance me love, for I run not the show,
Carry me up upon your golden wings,
Let me drop my old master, the ego,
And see the One that shows up as all things.

Great love flows here–
A world of darkness,
Seen in light,
Now bathed in love,
No longer fright,
Once seen as wrong,
Now seen as right,
One in the day,
And in the night.
This vision you gave me,
This sight.
And so, my dearest friend,
I write:

Oh Rumi–
Wise master of the Sufis,
Greatest of the mystic poets,
How light you write
In golden words that soar like birds,
Of those who dance in dazzling turns
And spin in wild spirals.

Dazed and dreamlike, dancing drunk
On the finest wine of love,
Which pours out of the Oneness
To fill cup-like open hearts
When the doors of mind gape wide,
Thrown open with abandon,
To let in the shining light
Of the sight of All as One.

Great love flows here.
